Widow Of First LAPD SWAT Officer To Be Killed In Line Of Duty Speaks On Dallas Shootings

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Back in 2008, Randy Simmons became the first LAPD SWAT officer to die in the line of duty.

His widow, Lisa Simmons, spoke to CBS2's Kristine Lazar about the recent police shootings in Dallas.

Like the officers in Dallas killed on Thursday night, Simmons' husband Randy was murdered in the line of duty.

"I get emotional because for every one bad cop, there are thousands of good cops. Unfortunately, it's not highlighted " Simmons said.

But Simmons' concern isn't only for law enforcement.

She says her heart also aches for the families affected by the two police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana.

"I understand their frustration, their anger ... I understand all of that, and it's justified in so many ways," she added.

Simmons says she cannot stop thinking about the little girl who was in the car when her mother's boyfriend, Philando Castile, was shot dead.

"There's a possibility that she would never trust a police officer again, and that breaks my heart," Simmons added.

Simmons still maintains a close relationship with the LAPD.

"It's not us against them, you know, we're in this together. Our community needs police and police need the community" she said.

"I worry about the safety of black officers, of white officers, Asian, Indian, all officers," Simmons added.
