Where The Jobs Are: City Of Hope Offers Perks -- And A Purpose
DUARTE (CBSLA.com) — Employees of the City of Hope Hospital know the perks and benefits are many.
The benefits include medical, dental, paid time off, tuition reimbursement, pet insurance, cancer insurance, group legal. The campus hosts a farmer's market, exercise classes and social events.
But the biggest perk of all, say longtime employees, is know they are making many people well.
Nurse Ginger Minkler has worked here 27 years.
"It makes me feel good to work for a company that has jobs to offer, because that means we are growing and we are needing more and more people," says Minkler, who works in pediatrics.
All told, the hospital is looking to fill 158 positions at its Duarte, South Pasadena and Antelope Valley locations.
City of Hope started in 1913. Back then it was just two tents on a 10-acre plot where patients with tuberculosis came for treatment.
The hospital is now celebrating 100 years and is considered one of the top cancer and diabetes treatment centers in the nation.
Of the more than 150 positions that need filling, many do not require nursing degrees.
"I think people forget to look for jobs in healthcare. When they're looking for a job and they're unemployed, they don't think to look at the local hospital, and a lot of their skills can be translated into the healthcare industry," says LeVell Romeyn, a nurse recruiter.
CBS2's Paul Magers reports that the hospital is looking to fill administrative positions as well as researchers and scientists.
Whatever the position, of course, a caring spirit and nature is key.
"Knowing that you did something bigger. You made a difference in somebody's life, and there's an opportunity for that every day," Minkler said.
