Happy Valentine's Day!

How did reading that phrase make you feel? Did it make you all warm and fuzzy? How about sad, angry, and depressed? Perhaps you are a soul that claims to never have known love, and seeing that phrase just reminded you that you needed to go out and buy a new twenty-sided die? Regardless of where your emotional state carried you off to, you must deal with the fact that Valentine's Day is nigh. But there are six other days during the week that demand to be filled with fun, apart from that day o' love that you may or may not care to celebrate.

Well, we believe that there is more to Valentine's Day week than chocolates, hearts, flowers, and all of that sappy stuff. Monday, February 13

Get proactive with the Valentine's Day spirit by bringing your beloved to enjoy this wild, offbeat romantic French-language film starring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, shown as part of the venue's Cinélove series; the only French romantic film series to be found in the greater Los Angeles Area. Okay, so the 2003 film is technically Belgian, but all of the dialogue here is French, so it's all good.

Tuesday, February 14

Looking for something to do that is distinctively anti-Valentine's day yet not full of moping self-pity? This show may very well be right up your alley. Come and escape the lovebirds and the "forever alone" crowd by rocking out with Dweezil Zappa as he tears through the catalogue of his father, the legendarily Frank Zappa, in this show touting boundary-pushing music and jaw-dropping virtuosity.

Wednesday, February 15

Mumbai's ramshackle Annawadi settlement tells much more than the alarming discrepancy between India's impoverished and wealthy. It also tells tales of hope, courage, and strength; attributes forged by those who struggle daily with forces of corruption and caste. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Katherine Boo covered Annawadi for three years, will be on hand to share firsthand stories of the men, women, and children that live within the settlement, and the ways in which they cope with the harsh conditions of everyday life.

Friday, February 17

The Church Lady. Garth Algar. President Bush. Everyone seems to have a favorite Dana Carvey character from his days on "Saturday Night Live" (we're a wee bit partial to "Massive Head Wound Harry" ourselves). Regardless of who was your preference, one thing's for sure: Carvey is a comedy legend. Come on down to see the iconic performer rock your funny bone with jokes, stories, and maybe even an impression or two. In fact, we're pretty sure about the impression part.

Saturday, February 18

Grab your kilt – you know you have one, don't lie – and lose yourself in a lively celebration of Scotland and all of its unique charms. Like caber tossing, for example. Thrill to the sound of bands, indulge in traditional food and drink, browse uniquely cool shopping opportunities, and yes, take in the awesome sight of big burly dudes tossing thick wooden logs across a field.

Sunday, February 19

The uber-talented Emmy and Tony Award winning comedienne and actress stops by OC to perform her critically acclaimed one-woman show. Attendees will be treated to a rollicking night of singing, dancing, comedy skits, and plenty of hilarious showbiz stories going all the way back to her days on the iconic television show "SCTV." If you're lucky, some of the stories may relate to her performance in the criminally underrated horror movie "Black Christmas."
