Week-Old Hathaway Fire Half Contained
BANNING (AP) — Firefighters are making slow but steady progress against a wildfire that has been burning in a rugged wilderness area of the San Bernardino National Forest near Banning for a week.
U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller said Sunday the Hathaway Fire that began June 9 is now slightly more than 50 percent contained.
The blaze began on the northern tip of the Morongo Indian Reservation and quickly moved into the forest, where it has blackened about 6 square miles of rugged timberland and brush.
No structures have burned but nine firefighters have suffered minor injuries.
More than 1,000 firefighters are battling the blaze, using helicopters, air tankers and other equipment.
Authorities don't expect to have it fully contained until June 25.
The cause is under investigation.
