Broken Water Main At Highland And Santa Monica Floods Streets
HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A broken water main at Highland Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard flooded streets and disrupted traffic in the area just before the evening rush hour Monday.
A Los Angeles Department of Water and Power supervisor on the scene said pressure from the rupture of a 6-inch cast iron water main installed in 1920 broke through about a foot of concrete, causing authorities to shut down traffic in both directions on the busy roadways.
Highland was shut down between Lexington Avenue and Romaine Street as of 5 p.m. Santa Monica remained shut between Las Palmas and Mansfield avenues.
Crews were able to shut off a portion of the main that broke around 6:30 p.m.
One business, a Walgreens on a corner of the intersection, was affected and remained without water as of 8 p.m. Monday.
There were no reports of flood damage at other businesses or residences.
LADWP Supervisor Kirk Broyard said crews were expected to repair the damage by Tuesday morning in hopes of avoiding congestion before the workday.
