Water Main Break Creates Muddy Mess In Hollywood Hills Neighborhood

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A water main break sent 1,000 gallons per minute gushing into a Hollywood Hills neighborhood Sunday, creating a muddy mess for several residents and businesses.

The eight inch main broke underground along Oak Glen Drive just before noon Sunday.

The break was close to an overpass that spans the 101 freeway, linking Universal City with the Hollywood Hills.

A Los Angeles Fire Department dump truck brought a load of sand to the scene.

Fire department crews sandbagged the flooded street to protect homes and apartment buildings.

Six businesses were affected in the 3300 block of Cahuenga Boulevard, and southbound lanes were closed for cleanup.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, most of the water was contained by 2 p.m.

No significant structural damage was reported, and there were no evacuations.

No injuries were reported.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews were responding to the break, along with inspectors from the Department of Building and Safety.

But as KCAL9's Erica Nochlin reported, the clean up will take a while.

She reported from the scene at 10 and 11 p.m. and people were still busy mopping up the mess.

Josh Debney had the wet carpets to prove it.

"It was pretty chaotic," he said, admittedly "bummed out. It's a lot to deal with ... I'm just kind of overwhelmed."

He's also worried about possible future mold damage.

"They think there is going to be water in the walls," he said, "I'm trying to just deal with it, I guess."

Lucille Tombaoi, a guest of a resident on the block, was grateful everyone was safe.

"You could see where all the water bubbled up," she said, "is almost looked like a boil in your skin."
