Man Suspected Of Assaulting Law Enforcement Officer Leads Police On Dangerous Chase
ANAHEIM (CBSLA) – A possibly armed suspect surrendered after leading police on a cross-county chase following an alleged assault on an officer Friday evening.
The pursuit winded through several cities, starting in Riverside around 4 p.m. when Riverside County Sheriff's deputies attempted to apprehend the suspect for an assault with a deadly weapon warrant. At some point, the suspect allegedly assaulted a law enforcement officer before taking off in a Jeep.
SKY9 was over the pursuit as the driver sped through residential streets, drove on the wrong side of the road and plowed through a dirt road alongside train tracks.
The driver then led authorities through Chino, Diamond Bar, Brea and Anaheim – flying through intersections and driving the wrong way on an on-ramp of the 91 Freeway.
Shortly after the driver exited the freeway and briefly stopped at a stoplight, a passenger was either pushed out or fell out of the vehicle. An unidentified woman was seen on the ground in the middle of the street near North Kraemer Boulevard and La Palma Avenue. A police cruiser stopped and brought her to a nearby parking lot while others officers continued the pursuit.
Before being taken to an area hospital for her treatment, the woman told officers she knew the driver, who she claimed was armed during the chase. She also said a pregnant woman was in the vehicle but she was seen walking away from the Jeep soon after the chase began. It is unclear if the women are victims or suspects.
The driver stopped at the intersection of East Cerritos Avenue and State College Boulevard in Anaheim just before 5:40 p.m., nearly two hours after the pursuit began. He then exited the vehicle with his hands up as law enforcement swarmed the area.
The man was taken into custody without incident.
