Wanted: Hit-And-Run Driver Who Killed Bicyclist, 19, In South LA
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Officials Thursday were searching for a hit-and-run driver they say killed a bicyclist in South Los Angeles.
The crash took place around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Normandie Avenue and West 47th Street.
The victim, 19-year-old Oscar Toledo Jr., was rushed to a hospital but later died.
Officials say Toledo was making a left turn onto Normandie from West 47th when he was struck by a car.
A witness told authorities the suspect was driving a red or burgundy Toyota Corolla or Pontiac.
Police say there were no skid marks on the road, which indicates that the driver never used his brakes and may not have seen Toledo.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the LAPD.
Friends and family gathered at the crash site Thursday night and left flowers and candles at a growing memorial.
They say Toledo had a young son and was working odd jobs to support his family.
"He was such a great guy. He would always be there for us whenever we needed someone to talk to. He was such a great friend. This is something unexpected, I would never have expected this to happen to him," said the victim's friend Kimberly Garcia.
Those who knew Toledo say they're angry the driver didn't stop to help their friend.
"It's not fair to leave him there to die. He could have been saved," a girl at the site said, while sobbing. "And now he's not going to come back."
