Virginia Man Gets Life In Dana Point Boat Murder
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A Virginia man was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a murder he committed here in Southern California.
A jury convicted Gary Shawkey of swindling a Phoenix man out of $1.2 million between 2004 and 2008.
The victim, 71-year-old Robert Vendrick, became reluctant to hand over more money.
Shawkey, however, lured him to a boat in Dana Point - supposedly to learn more about an investment.
After they sailed out of the harbor, Shawkey killed Vendrick and tossed his body overboard.
His body was never found.
