High School Football Player Leaves Game After Opponent Smears Icy-Hot In His Face

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —A Salesian High School student is accused of smearing Icy-Hot on an opposing player's face during a high school football game.

Angel Salazar walked off the field in pain after the incident, when this photo was taken.

"Our player came to the sidelines, and he was covered in Icy-Hot. Covered in his face," said La Canada Principal Ian McFeat.

The incident was actually caught on video as well when the La Canada team took on Salesian High School.

Allegedly, a Salesian player reached under Salazar's face mask and smeared a heat-rub substance on the teen's face.

"That's the kind of substance that if it really got in your eyes, it can do some damage", McFeat added.

Earlier this month in Texas, two high school football players blindsided a referee but have since apologized and told "Good Morning America" that their coach made them do it because they say the referee was making bad calls and using racial slurs.

Clinical psychologist and Pepperdine University professor Judy Ho says that young athletes will follow a coach's order out of respect and fear.

"When you're an athlete, you're constantly feeling like your job is on the line. There's always a question of are you going to get to play today," Ho added.

Ho says phone cameras are making it easier to document misbehavior like this, which is why La Canada decided to share the images and video with the media.

"The big thing is that we don't want this to happen to any other students," McFeat said.
