Viewing Parties To Be Held Downtown For Presidential Immigration Rally
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A viewing party will be held in the Westlake District Tuesday during President Barack Obama's rally for public support of immigration overhaul.
Several members of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), as well as other immigration rights groups invited by the White House, caravaned to Las Vegas early Tuesday to see President Obama's speech.
On Monday, a bi-partisan group of eight senators made up of four Democrats and four Republicans, laid out a new plan to overhaul immigration.
The group's proposal provides a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants in the United States in exchange for increased border security.
President Obama is expected to support the plan that some lawmakers believe can succeed where others have failed.
"We hope that what the President is saying is in line with what the senators have said yesterday and that they create a pathway to citizenship because that's what we really hope to be integrated into the country," Pedro Trujillo, 21, of CHIRLA said.
The President is also expected to discuss his own vision for immigration reform, which he first made public in May 2011. His plan is said to be similar to the senators' strategy.
"More than me hearing the President is to have a presence over there. To remind the President that he has to compromise with the immigrant community, with the immigrant vote. So we are here, we are waiting for the solution," Antontio Bernabe said.
The Las Vegas rally will be held at 11:55 a.m. A viewing party will be held at the CIRLA headquaters, 2533 West Third St., in Los Angeles.
