Vernon Disincorporation Bill Goes To Calif. Senate
SACRAMENTO (AP) — A key California committee has passed a bill to take away cityhood from a troubled Los Angeles suburb.
Assembly Speaker John Perez says disincorporation of the city of Vernon is the only way to end corruption in the industrial town of about 1,800 businesses and fewer than 100 residents.
The Senate committee approved the bill Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Times says the attempt by the Legislature to dissolve a charter city now moves to the full Senate. The Assembly has already approved AB46, sponsored by Perez.
If signed into law, Vernon's municipal government would be eliminated and it would be replaced with a new special district overseen by Los Angeles County.
Three Vernon officials have been indicted on public-corruption charges in recent years.
