Minivan Fatally Slams Into Man Waiting Near Bus Stop In Burbank

BURBANK (CBSLA.com)   —  A man walking near a bus stop in Burbank was killed Friday when a minivan slammed into him and dragged him down the street.

Paramedics arrived on scene just after 5 p.m.

The accident occurred at Olive Avenue and San Fernando Road, authorities said.

The deceased was trapped under the vehicle, officials said.

Security video shows a minivan swerving onto the Burbank sidewalk. The victim was a man in his 60s.

KCAL9's Tom Wait reported from the scene and spoke to witnesses.

"The driver of this car, hit my car before he came over here. Mine was the only car he hit," said David Schoenbrun.

He was eating dinner with his young daughter nearby when he saw police surrounding his Mercedes.

Schoenbrun told Wait he can't imagine what would have happened if he or his child had been standing near his car when it was hit.

"God forbid. I don't even want to think that way. I don't want to think that way," Schoenbrun said.

Police described his path toward the bus stop along the sidewalk "threading the needle. "

From the video it appears the victim had very little time to react. Police don't know if he was headed to the bus stop when the accident happened.

The video shows several Good Samaritans race to the victim in an effort to help him.

"If there was pedestrians on the sidewalk here, they were not in the street. There's no vehicles traveling down the sidewalk, obviously when the car ends up on the sidewalk it will end up with someone being injured. Or, in this case, unfortunately, with a fatality," said Claudio Losacco of the Burbank Police Department.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, Wait reported.

Police are not saying if the driver was intoxicated or under the influence.

A witness at the scene did say he "saw and heard something" and may have some answers to how the accident happened.

The witness intimated the minivan driver might have been stabbed before crashing.
