Van Nuys street racing crash leaves 2 people in critical condition, 2 others wounded

Two men were left in critical condition and another two wounded after a vehicle crashed into another car that was street racing in Van Nuys, police said Saturday.

The collision happened near 14561 West Sherman Circle around 10:30 p.m. Friday, with paramedics transporting two men from the scene in critical condition while a man and a woman were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. One of the two cars racing just before the crash fled the scene, authorities said.

The two critically injured victims were not involved in the street racing, the Los Angeles Police Department said Saturday. They were inside a car making a left turn when it slammed into one of the racing vehicles, according to police. 

Aerial footage of the scene shows four damaged vehicles at an intersection, one of them completely crushed to the ground. The night of the crash, LAFD said there were two cars involved. A day later, police did not confirm the involvement of additional vehicles.

The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation. 

No other details have been released by authorities.
