USS Iowa Inches Closer To Its Final Destination
SAN PEDRO (CBS) — The USS Iowa is one step closer to becoming a floating museum in the Southland.
Cristy Fajardo, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, says a tugboat began towing the 887-foot, 45,000-ton ship into its temporary berth at the Port of Los Angeles on Saturday morning.
It's expected to reach Angels Gate near the Cabrillo Marina where it will spend about a week before being moved to its final home, Berth 87, on June 9.
Veterans, who served on board the battleship, were on hand to greet the country's last World War II-era battleship.
"She was made to hunt the enemy, go toe-to-toe, slug it out until one sank but she was built for survivability," said Bob Rogers of the Pacific Battleship Center.
Fajardo reports that the USS Iowa served in World War II, as well as the Korean War before it was decommissioned in 1990.
It's been anchored offshore since arriving in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Tours are expected to begin July 7.
