USC Public Security Officer Caught Sleeping On The Job After City Officials Promise More Safety

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A public security officer sitting in a kiosk set up in the neighborhood where two USC graduate students were killed was caught apparently dozing off just hours after city officials promised more safety around the campus.

The officer was in a public security mobile kiosk set up in the neighborhood where Ying Wu and Ming Qu were found shot to death just after 1 a.m. on April 17.

The kiosk was set up to help make students feel safer and to serve as a warning to local gangs in the area.

Carey Drayton, chief of USC's department of public safety, had a look at the video.

"It's unfortunate that somebody doesn't pay attention to what our policies, procedures and training tell them not to do – don't have the appearance of being asleep," Drayton said. "So I can't say he was or was not sleeping, but it certainly appears, if anybody were to look at that, to have been asleep, so we have policies and procedures against that."

It's not known yet whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the sleeping officer.
