USC Looking To Fill Nearly 700 Positions
LOS ANGELES (CBS2) — Need a job? The University of Southern California is looking to fill nearly 700 positions.
The institution, which employs more than 15,000 people, is the largest private employer in Los Angeles.
"You don't have to be a professor, you don't have to have a doctorate, you don't have to have a Ph.D. to work at USC," said USC talent acquisition strategist, David F. Brown.
In fact, about 12,000 of its employees serve in non-academic, administrative roles, like public safety officer, Steven Jaen.
"I take police reports, handle crimes that are in progress, any type of emergency calls," Jaen said. "I was lucky that as an 18-year-old kid the department took a chance on me and hired me as a community service officer."
Michelle Velasco from USC's Department of Public Safety said Jaen's passion for law enforcement stood out to her.
"He did such a good job of being an unarmed officer that we've sent him through the LAPD Academy. He got all his training to become a public safety officer," said Velasco.
Jaen said one of the perks of working at USC is the opportunity to get a master's degree.
"That is a benefit that happens with 'SC. They do help out with your tuition for the school," he said.
In addition to open positions at USC's downtown campus, recruiter Bryan Hickey said there are more than 400 jobs available at the Keck Medical Center of USC in East L.A.
"That ranges anywhere from nurses to administrative support staff… the environmental support staff that helps keep the facility clean," Hickey said.
Hickey helps Debbie Peterson, a manager in the urology unit, hire nurses.
"We have a wide range of positions in nursing... from new graduates all the way to experienced ICU nurses and advanced practice nurses," said Peterson.
Peterson said it's the quality of care she once received as a cancer patient at USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center that made her want to work for the institution.
"I was treated so well that I just wanted to come back and be part of what they did there. I have been working here ever since," she said.
Peterson also said the educational perks at the campus are a plus.
"If you have a child that gets accepted to USC, you have an opportunity for them to get free tuition, which I'm taking advantage of as we speak," she said.
