US Senate OKs Ontario Airport Transfer Measure
ONTARIO (AP) — The U.S. Senate has approved a measure helping restore Ontario International Airport to local control after 20 years of ownership by neighboring Los Angeles.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein's office announced passage Wednesday of a measure allowing the transfer of certain airport fees that are key to the transfer. The bill passed the House on Monday.
Ontario gave airport ownership to Los Angeles World Airports in 1985. But a lawsuit filed three years ago claimed that agency reneged on promises to upgrade Ontario International and intentionally neglected the struggling airfield.
A settlement reached last year would return ownership to Ontario, which will pay LA World Airports $120 million over 10 years and assume airport debts.
The transfer must still be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and local agencies.
