The accident occurred at the intersection of Ward Street and Ellis Avenue, according to Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Guy Dove.
The police van was transporting five prisoners to the main jail in Santa Ana when a man driving a Toyota Camry plowed into the vehicle.
Police identified the man driving the Camry as Juan Ruiz, who reportedly was unlicensed.
Ruiz was not arrested but charges are pending.
The five inmates and a detention officer in the van were transported to a local hospital, along with Ruiz, and suffered minor injuries, Dove said.
