Vander Tuig Masterful In UCLA Win Over New Mexico At NCAA Regionals
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Nick Vander Tuig took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and UCLA snapped New Mexico's 10-game winning streak with a 7-1 victory in the Los Angeles Regional on Saturday night.
Vander Tuig (9-3) struck out a career-high 11 and lost his no-hit bid when Trey Porras led off the eighth with a double. He allowed an unearned run in the fifth as the Bruins (44-14) won their sixth straight and 13th in 14 games.
The Lobos (37-23) entered the tournament with a team batting average of .333, but were held to their lowest hits total -- two -- of the season while UCLA pounded out 17 hits. Gera Sanchez (8-3) took the loss for New Mexico.
Vander Tuig retired the first 12 batters he faced. Ryan Padilla reached on left fielder Cody Keefer's error in the fifth and scored on Porras' run-scoring groundout.
