UCLA's Bauer Wins Prestigious Golden Spikes Award
SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBS/AP) -- UCLA right-hander Trevor Bauer has won the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player.
The award was announced Friday by the U.S. Baseball Federation.
"Being mentioned with the past recipients of this award is an amazing honor and privilege. On a personal note, it's validation of all the hard work, time, sweat and tears that have gone into getting me to this point in my career. But I could never have accomplished this without the help of my teammates, coaches, friends and parents who have been with me along the ride. I can't thank them enough, and I don't really know how to express the jubilation I'm experiencing right now."
Bauer was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the third pick on the first round of last month's amateur draft after going 13-2 with 1.25 ERA and Division I-leading and Pac-10 record 203 strikeouts.
He finished the season with nine consecutive complete games.
Virginia left-hander Danny Hultzen and Texas right-hander Taylor Jungmann were the other finalists.
Hultzen and Jungmann also were first-round picks, with Seattle drafting Hultzen second and Milwaukee taking Jungmann 12th.
This was the first time in the 34-year history of the award that all three finalists were pitchers.
