UC Student Unaccounted For In France, 3 More Hurt After Deadly Truck Attack
DEL MAR (CBSLA.com) — A University of California student from Del Mar was named Friday among those still unaccounted for after the deadly truck attack in Nice, France.
Nicolas Leslie, a junior at UC Berkeley, was visiting France with other students for a 15-day program called Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Europe at the time of the mayhem, according to school officials.
His mother posted on Facebook a photo of her son, hoping someone would recognize him.
A college friend of the missing Del Mar native texted that some Berkeley students saw him on the promenade at the time of the attack but he never returned to student housing.
Leslie's social media account has not been active since Thursday's attack.
A former roommate told CBS2/KCAL9's Michele Gile that he got a Snapchat message from the 20-year-old minutes before the mayhem, showing him enjoying the Bastille Day celebrations and fireworks.
Program staffers were working with fellow students in France along with family members and local and U.S. officials to locate Leslie.
The student's uncle and aunt are in Nice trying to locate him, the Wall Street Journal reported.
A close family friend said the family plans to fly to France Saturday.
Two other Berkeley students sustained broken legs while a third had a broken foot, officials said.
The EIE program was temporarily suspended following the attack to commemorate national days of mourning in France and is expected to continue through the end of July.
The attack, which killed at least 84 people and injured more than 200, occurred Thursday night local time when a truck struck hundreds of people during a fireworks display celebrating Bastille Day.
