UC Schools Prepare For Deep Budget Cuts
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California's Board of Regents is meeting in San Francisco to develop plans to cope with another massive loss of state funding.
Gov. Jerry Brown has already signed legislation reducing support for the 10-campus system by $500 million to roughly $2.5 billion for the coming fiscal year.
When Brown issued his revised budget proposal Monday, he warned that UC could lose another $500 million if the state does not extend several temporary tax increases. So far the governor doesn't have enough Republican support for the tax extensions.
UC President Mark Yudof says a budget cut of that magnitude would likely force the university to raise tuition again.
At Wednesday's board meeting, UC administrators plan to lay out strategies to deal with the loss of state support.
