Uber Tries Self-Driving Cars
PITTSBURGH (CBSLA.com) — Uber is launching public trials of fully self-driving cars in Pittsburgh this month.
A driver will be in the car, and will be able to override the self-driving system.
Uber has six self-driving cars out and about in Pittsburgh, with plans to increase that number to 100 by the end of the year. Uber is using Ford and Volvo models.
The ride sharing service hasn't given an exact start date, but the self-driving option is expected to be available in the next few weeks.
Passengers who choose the self-driving cars will get free rides.
"Well I've never ridden in a self driving car so I don't know that I would trust it," said Nanette Zumwalt of Huntington Beach.
According to the Boston Consulting Group, 48 percent of Americans are willing to try self-driving cars.
"It's modern, you know," said Uber user Deidre Fitzpatrick. "Technology is advancing, our computers are smarter right now than we are so why not trust a computer with you?"
