U.N. Secretary-General Urges Gadhafi To Stop Violence Against Protestors
BEVERLY HILLS (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is in Beverly Hills and says he has spoken extensively to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, urging him to respect human rights and to stop the violence against protestors in Tripoli and Benghazi.
Ki-moon told reporters at a hotel Monday that he spoke to Gadhafi by telephone for 40 minutes. Ki-moon is in Southern California to promote a U.N. Foundation event.
The secretary general says it was a violation of international humanitarian law for warplanes and helicopters to fire on protestors. He says such actions must stop immediately.
The U.N. Security Council is scheduled to meet to address the matter Tuesday morning.
Ki-moon says he has spoken with the king of Bahrain and top military leaders in Egypt.
