Two Police Officers Shot Dead In Honolulu, Suspect Presumed Dead
HONOLULU (CBSLA) — Two Hawaii police officers were killed in a shooting in a residential area near famed tourist sites Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head in Honolulu.
It all began when the 69-year-old suspect stabbed his landlord in the leg. He then ambushed responding officers with gunfire before torching his house, a fire that ripped through the neighborhood, destroying at least seven homes and several cars.
Honolulu police said the suspect, identified as Jaroslav Hanel, is presumed dead inside the home where the trouble began just after 9 a.m. Sunday.
Police say the suspect, who was being evicted from his multi-family home, attacked his landlord before turning on police. One witness reported hearing as many as twenty shots, and then, once the fire started, what sounded like exploding ammunition.
Slain officers Kaulike Kalama and Tiffany-Victoria Enriquez were young veterans, each with less than ten years on the the force.
Dozens of officers rushed to the hospital where both died.
