Two Killed In Fiery Head-On Wrong-Way Wreck On 210 Freeway In La Crescenta
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Two drivers were killed and a passenger was critically injured when a car traveling the wrong way on the 210 Freeway in La Crescenta early Monday morning careened head-on into another car.
The crash occurred on the eastbound 210 Freeway at La Crescenta Avenue at approximately 2:44 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol.
A Mazda speeding the wrong way on the freeway collided head on into another car and burst into flames.
"As we saw his headlights coming we actually moved over a lane, and one second later, he moved past us," said witness Dave Hill, who narrowly avoided the wrong-way driver and called 911.
Both drivers died at the scene, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reports. The innocent driver's family identified him to CBSLA as a 27-year-old man.
A passenger in the Mazda somehow escaped the burning car and was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
No names were released.
All eastbound lanes just west of Ocean View Boulevard were blocked for several hours, with eastbound traffic being diverted at Pennsylvania Avenue. The freeway was fully reopened just after 7 a.m.
The exact circumstances of the wreck and whether drugs or alcohol were involved remain under investigation.
