Hostess Products Flying Off Store Shelves In The Inland Empire

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Some Twinkie lovers across Southern California had the same goal in mind Friday after hearing the news that Hostess was calling it quits: To stock up.

Pick-A-Side: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE HOSTESS TREAT?

At Hostess brand retail bakery outlets in San Bernardino and Riverside, the tasty treats were flying off store shelves, along with Ding Dongs, and Honey Buns. Apparently, it was the same story at all 570 outlets across the country, reported CBS2's Greg Mills.

Hostess Brands Inc. announced Friday that it would stop production of the iconic treats, laying off thousands of employees nationwide, including more than 400 in Southern California.

The move comes amid a nationwide worker strike.

"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," Gregory F. Rayburn, the company CEO, said.

The Associated Press reports that some of the beloved treats like Ding Dongs and Ho Ho's likely will be snapped up by buyers and find a second life, but for now, the company says its snack cakes should be on shelves for another week or so.

Johnte Johnson told Mills at the San Bernardino outlet that he was on his second Hostess stop of the day in search of Honey Buns. As they disappear, Twinkies top the best-sellers list. A box on eBay was selling for $25, according to Mills.
