Truck Slams Into Garden Grove Police Car During Separate DUI Stop
GARDEN GROVE (CBS) — A pair of Garden Grove police officers who just pulled over another motorist for allegedly driving drunk had to scramble out of the way when a truck slammed into the back of their squad car during the stop.
The officers had just made a DUI stop on Orangewood Avenue east of Haster Street in Anaheim, when the green 1994 Ford F150 with no headlights on slammed into the back of their squad car just before 2 a.m., Garden Grove police Sgt. William Allison said. The patrol car had its emergency lights activated at the time.
The 28-year-old driver of the pickup truck tried to get out and run away, but was quickly caught, Allison said.
The other motorist, a 42-year-old Anaheim man who was in the back of the squad car at the time of the crash, was not hurt, Allison said, but he was taken to Garden Grove Medical Center as a precaution.
The pickup truck's driver broke his nose and suffered cuts to his face.
Investigators later determined the driver had crashed into three parked cars along Haster Street, north of Chapman Avenue, before hitting the squad car.
Anaheim police are investigating the collision with the Garden Grove police car. Garden Grove officers will take the hit-and-run accident investigation, Allison said.
Neither driver's name was released.
