Traffic Backed Up For Miles After Pedestrian Is Fatally Struck On 5 Freeway Near Castaic Lake

CASTAIC LAKE (CBSLA.com) — A massive backup was reported in the Castaic Lake area after a pedestrian was fatally struck on the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway.

The freeway was backed up for about five miles as of 11 p.m. Monday following the deadly collision. The driver believed to have struck the pedestrian did stop following the crash.

Stu Mundel, who was flying overhead, reported that it was taking drivers over two hours to get from Valencia to the Castaic Lake area as traffic had been reduced to one lane.

It remains unclear why the pedestrian was walking on the northbound lanes of the busy thoroughfare near Lake Hughes.

A coroner's official has not yet arrived, and an investigation was still ongoing.
