Tobey Maguire: No Wrongdoing In Hollywood Poker Matches
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tobey Maguire didn't just win $300,000 from a man convicted of running a Ponzi scheme -- the actor's attorney notes he also lost $168,500 to the convicted con man.
An attorney for the "Spider-Man" star in court filings released Thursday denied any wrongdoing and that the actor owes Ponzi investors anything. But he writes that if Maguire is required to pay any money back, it should be reduced by the amount he lost to the Ponzi's operator during the Texas Hold 'Em matches held at upscale hotels.
A bankruptcy trustee sued Maguire and 21 others in March, alleging the group should have to return more than $4 million they won from a man convicted of running a Ponzi scheme.
The suits claim the games were unlicensed and winners can't keep the money.
