Thousands Participate In Huntington Beach's Surf City Marathon
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Carla McAlister, 39, set a new course record in Sunday's 17th Annual Surf City USA Marathon. The reigning Surf City women's champion finished in a time of 2:56:28. McAlister, from San Clemente, bested the old mark of 2:57:19 set by Nadia Noorzia in 2006.
Tyler Sewald, a 30-year-old from Greeley, Colorado won the men's marathon with a time of 2:29:38. Sewald came in 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Tim Harder, 27, of Aliso Viejo.
Thousands of people Sunday took part in this year's Surf City USA Marathon in Huntington Beach.
A record 21,000-people from around the country and world were slated to participate in this year's race. The previous record of 20,000 was set last year.
The oceanfront race got underway at 6:30 a.m. on the Pacific Coast Highway.
An estimated 50,000 spectators were also expected to attend.
Participants were raising funds for "Free Wheelchair Mission" -- an Irvine-based non-profit organization that builds and delivers wheelchairs to developing nations.
