Thousand Oaks' Querrey Is Last American Ousted At U.S. Open
NEW YORK (AP) -- Sam Querrey has been ousted from the U.S. Open, meaning no American man will make the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the second straight year.
The 20th-seeded Querrey lost Tuesday to No. 25 Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a fourth-round match that took nearly 4 1/2 hours in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Querrey was the last U.S. man left in the tournament. Earlier, No. 19 Mardy Fish, No. 18 John Isner, No. 9 Andy Roddick and 11 others had been eliminated.
America's last male champion at the U.S. Open was Roddick in 2003.
The country's only hope for a singles title now rests with Venus Williams, the lone U.S. player left in the women's draw.
