The Real 'Carmageddon'? 405 Bridge Work Slows School Commuters

LOS ANGELES (CBS)Half of a bridge is adding up to a whole lot of trouble for drivers around the 405 Freeway.

KNX 1070's John Brooks reports "Carmageddon" may have never materialized, but for those who drive one particular stretch of Mulholland Drive, it's only just begun.

For residents in Encino, Bel Air, and Sherman Oaks, along with those who regularly commute on Mulholland, getting across the half-demolished bridge can be a challenge — especially now that parents are dropping off nearly 3,000 kids who attend the nine schools near the Sepulveda Pass.

"I came up here at 7:00 this morning to drop off my first child and the traffic was all the way back to Calneva," said one mom.

A separate replacement bridge would have kept the Mulholland bridge at four lanes rather than two, but that idea was recently vetoed by neighborhood groups.

"All of the people that had the chance to let the bridge-building people put the second bridge in would have precluded all this trouble," he said.

A traffic control officer was spotted at Mulholland and Skirball during Monday's morning commute in an effort to keep traffic moving as school classes resumed for fall session.
