Teens Get Home Probation After Brutal Beating, Carjacking Of Canyon Country Man
CANYON COUNTRY (CBSLA.com) — A Canyon Country man spoke out Friday after two teens were sentenced to home probation following a brutal beating and carjacking two months ago.
The incident happened on Aug. 10, when 59-year-old Sanford Goldstyn was walking to his Canyon Country apartment after work.
He says it was then that three teenagers approached him, demanding his keys. When he kept walking, he says they beat him up and took off in his car.
Bloody and disoriented, Goldstyn managed to call 911. He says police recovered his vehicle and apprehended the suspects two hours later.
On Thursday, Goldstyn was in court when a judge sentenced two of the three teens to house arrest and probation after serving 45 days in juvenile hall.
KCAL9 Legal Analyst Steve Meister says the sentence seem light considering the crimes.
"Carjacking is serious, violent felony. So is assault. He was badly injured and I would expect them to at least do camp," Meister said.
And that's what Goldstyn was hoping for – detention camp for the teenagers.
Goldstyn, who serves as an alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselor, says he wants to be able to forgive his assailants. He says one of the teens apologized to him in court.

Meanwhile, Goldstyn stills suffers from chronic headaches and blurred vision. He tells KCAL9's Brittney Hopper that he hopes to return to work soon and hopes the teens have learned from what happened.
"You got a second chance. Be grateful you got a second chance and make the best use of it," he said.
