Target: Data Was Stolen From 70M Americans During Security Breach

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Retail giant Target announced Friday that personal information for as many as 70 million Americans was compromised during last month's security breach.

The company previously announced that 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been exposed from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, 2013.

As many as 30 million additional customers may have had their names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses stolen.

"I know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken and we are truly sorry they are having to endure this," Target Chairman, President and CEO Gregg Steinhafel said. "I also want our guests to know that understanding and sharing the facts related to this incident is important to me and the entire Target team."

The company is offering one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all guests who shopped at Target stores during the affected dates.

Less than two weeks ago, the company also announced that thousands of gift cards sold during the holiday season weren't activated properly.
