Sylmar Man, 27, Charged In Butcher Knife Murder Of His Mother, 58
SAN FERNANDO (CBSLA.com) — A Sylmar man was charged Thursday in stabbing death of his mother, believed to have been committed with a butcher knife.
Freddie Sanchez, 27, was scheduled to be arraigned at the San Fernando courthouse this afternoon on the murder charge.
He was arrested Tuesday afternoon, after police responded to a 911 call in the 13900 block of Herron Street and found his 58-year-old mother, Matilde, dead in their living room from multiple stab wounds.
Police said they recovered a butcher knife -- believed to be the murder weapon -- at the scene.
The suspect's uncle was inside the residence at the time of the stabbing, along with another man, and implicated his nephew in the crime, according to Lt. Paul Vernon of the LAPD's Mission Division.
Vernon told the Los Angeles Daily News that police had recently been called to the home because the suspect was "starting fires and kicking in doors, so obviously there were problems and his behavior was problematic."
Sanchez, who is jailed in lieu of $1 million bail, faces up to 16 years to life in prison if convicted, according to the District Attorney's Office.
