SUV Rear-Ends Truck, Truck Hits Family In Crosswalk
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Police say a woman, her 3-month-old child and her niece were struck as they walked in a Huntington Beach crosswalk Tuesday.
A Chevrolet Tahoe slammed into the back of a Toyota pickup truck that had stopped for the family on Springdale Street near Croupier Drive just before 10 a.m. The impact sent the truck into the woman, who was pushing the infant in a stroller while walking with her niece and nephew, Huntington Beach police Lt. Russell Reinhart said.
The collision seriously injured the mother and her niece and left the 3-month-old in critical condition. The woman's nephew was not hurt.
City officials have been mulling the removal of the crosswalk, which would force pedestrians to cross about 1,300 south at an intersection with a traffic signal, Reinhart said. The Public Works Department has scheduled a public hearing on Oct. 20 for that proposal.
Last year, a crossing guard was posted at the crosswalk, but a guard has not been assigned to the crossing this year, KCAL 9's Michele Gile reported.
However, a crossing guard would have not made a difference in Tuesday's crash because students have not yet gone back to school and the crossing guard would not have been on duty at 10 a.m. even if school was back in session.
