The suspect -- identified by authorities as a Hispanic man -- had entered the store and attempted to steal a bottle of beer, the statement said.
That's when an employee at the store followed the suspect outside but fell and was knocked unconscious.
After fleeing on foot, the statement says the suspect returned and allegedly struck the victim with the full 40-ounce beer bottle.
The victim, whose condition was not immediately known, was also repeatedly punched, authorities said.
