Man Suspected In Carjacking In Custody After Barricading Himself In South Gate Home

SOUTH GATE (CBSLA.com) — A man suspected in a carjacking who was holed up inside a home in South Gate, prompting police to warn the public stay away from the area, has been taken into custody, police said.

South Gate police surrounded a home on Capistrano Avenue – the next street east of Pescadero – after the man was reported to be firing shots from inside.

Residents were advised to "shelter in place" and visitors were urged to stay away from the neighborhood.

The suspect reportedly fired 20 rounds at South Gate police officers.

A SWAT team was called to assist at the scene.

The residence's rear house and three neighboring homes were evacuated. Residents in the area will be allowed back into their homes about 4 p.m., police said.

"(The police) were saying 'come out with your hands up' and they were yelling 'we have a permit for your arrest, and if you don't come out, we're going to go in with the squad'," witness Gilberto Contreras said. "After that, I heard two gunshots. I heard two gunshots, which were clear."

Police say there were closer to 15 shots fired toward police officers as they worked to evacuate the area.
