Suspected Car Thief Flees Officers, Wages Hours-Long Standoff In South LA Home
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An early-morning pursuit of a stolen vehicle Saturday took an unexpected turn when the suspect ran into a home and waged a tense four-hour standoff in South LA.
The man was taken into custody around 7:30 a.m, Los Angeles police spokeswoman Sally Madera said.
The incident began at 2:40 a.m. at the intersection of South Vermont Avenue and West 79th Street. Officers spotted a stolen Chevy Tahoe whose driver may have been involved in a nearby shooting, LAPD Sgt. C. Meisner said.
When the car was stopped, the driver fled.
But two other men in the vehicle were taken into custody.
As officers ran behind, the suspect broke into one house, and then ran into a second one, in the 300 block of West 112th Street.
The suspect waged a hours-long standoff with SWAT officers until he was eventually arrested.
The suspect's identity was not yet known. Officials have not said whether he was armed.
