Suspected Bank Robber Taken Down After Dye Pack Blows His Cover
FULLERTON (CBS) — A man suspected of robbing a Fullerton bank near closing time was behind bars.
Fullerton police say 47-year-old Jason Eugene Archuleta of Los Angeles held up an Opus Bank branch on Brookhurst Road and Orangethorpe Avenue just after 5 p.m. Friday.
Cristy Fajardo, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, spoke to Glenn Zachman, who sells video to TV stations. He was eating next door when he heard the commotion.
"Witnesses said that they spotted the suspect running around towards the back of the strip center. And so I jumped in my van, drove around back and police had just caught the suspect. They had him on the ground and they had him detained in handcuffs and so I started shooting video," Zachman said.
"Curiosity got the best of me being a news cameraman and I rushed over with my camera. I saw money laying in the ground, starting to blow in the breeze," he added.
Police say the would-be robber ditched that money, which was covered in dye, in the parking lot.
"The suspect had discarded an envelope with money from the bank and had taken off some of him clothing during his escape on foot," said Fullerton police Cpl. Tim Kandler.
Archuleta has been booked at Fullerton Jail. Police say a weapon was not recovered at the scene.
Bank personnel would not comment.
