Police Search For Suspect In Fatal Home Gardens Hit-And-Run
HOME GARDENS (CBSLA.com) — Police have confirmed the make and model of a car that fatally struck a 55-year-old woman in Home Gardens, but the driver in the crash remains at large.
Rosa Lagunas Guzman was leaving her 9-year-old grandson's party at her son's home just after 8 p.m. Saturday when a silver Honda Accord struck her and kept going, the California Highway Patrol said.
"I come out running and seen my mom lying down right there," her son, Jose Barcenas, said.
Guzman's daughter, Rosemary Guzman, was also a witness to the crash.
"My dad told me to get out of the way," she said. "My mom didn't hear, and it hit my mom."
Witnesses called 911, and the mother of eight was taken to Corona Regional Medical Center, where she died less than an hour later.
According to the California Highway Patrol, investigators have determined that the Honda was a 2003-2007 model and had sustained right front-end damage as a result of the impact.
Anyone with information can contact the CHP Riverside office at (951) 637-8000.
The family set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Guzman's funeral expenses.
Neighbors are also raising concerns about the lack of street lighting and sidewalks on the street where Guzman was killed. Drivers often travel on the street at speeds well above the speed limit, neighbors said.
