Suspect Arrested In Deadly Hit-And-Run Crash In Irvine
IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — A 20-year-old man suspected in a hit-and-run crash in Irvine that left a woman dead and three people injured has been arrested, police said Thursday.
Alec Scott Abraham, was arrested in Costa Mesa at about 1 p.m. in a Costa Mesa park. Detectives are working to determine how Abraham made it to the park.
Abraham, who apparently contacted the media with the intention of turning himself in, sustained minor injuries in the crash and was being treated at a hospital. Authorities say he will be booked at Orange County Jail Thursday afternoon.
Around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, three vehicles collided at the intersection of Muirlands Boulevard, near Barranca Parkway, and Alton Parkway, according to the Irvine Police Department.
Upon their arrival, officers located a white Chevy Cruze, a black Honda Civic, and a black Ford Mustang at the crash site.
Authorities said two adult women traveled with a young boy and girl in the Chevy Cruze. Paramedics pronounced the 54-year-old Katherine Hampton, the driver of the Chevy Cruze, dead at the scene.
According to the Orange County Fire Authority, Hampton's adult daughter and 2-year-old and 7-year-old grandchildren were taken to a trauma center. They remain listed in serious condition.
According to city officials, a 30-year-old woman was the sole occupant in the Honda. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries, and has since been released.
"You can see from the damage that this was a pretty serious impact," said Farrah Emami, of the Irvine Police Department. "We know it was serious based on the severity of injuries to our victims."
Detectives said the suspect traveled in the Ford, and fled from the scene on foot.
A SigAlert was issued in the area through late morning hours.
Officials said eastbound Alton Parkway was closed at Technology East; westbound Alton Parkway was reduced to one lane from Jeronimo Road through the intersection; southbound Barranca Parkway was closed at Ada; and northbound Barranca Parkway was reduced to one lane while traffic will make a forced-right at Alton Parkway.
The investigation is ongoing as officers work to determine if speed was a factor or if anyone was driving under the influence.
