Suspect Leads Police On Wild, Spark-Filled Chase From OC To IE
NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A suspect in a pickup truck wanted for a code violation and outstanding warrant led police on a wild and dangerous, spark-filled chase Friday evening.
The incident started in Newport Beach about 10:10 p.m. and went through Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa before police got the California Highway Patrol involved.
The chase ended about an hour and 20 minutes after it began on the northbound 215, just south of the 210 in San Bernardino.
During the pursuit, the driver rode recklessly and often lost control of the dark blue Dodge.
At one point the suspect appeared to lose his left front tire. He started driving on the axle until it sparked constantly. Reporting in Sky2, Stu Mundel said, "He looks like a comet."
The truck became disabled, hugged the side of the road, while the driver looked like he was still trying to floor it. Huge puffs of smoke poured from underneath the under carriage.
After stopping the vehicle, the suspect started the truck up again. As Mundel reported, "I am surprised he's not on fire."
When the suspect finally got out of the vehicle, he appeared very unsteady on his feet. He stumbled a few times while walking towards officers.
