Suspect Leads Police On High-Speed Chase After Tow Yard Carjacking

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A high-speed chase that began as a carjacking from a vehicle tow yard in El Monte ended with one suspect in custody, police said Monday.

KNX 1070's Claudia Peschiutta reports the male suspect in a Mitsubishi Eclipse led authorities on a pursuit through the San Gabriel Valley at speeds that topped 100 miles per hour.

The suspect crashed the Eclipse through a tow yard gate along the 2400 block of Exline Street shortly before 11:55 a.m. and led authorities on a chase along the 210 and 605 freeways through the cities of El Monte and Pomona, according to El Monte Police Lt. Christopher Williams.

After unsuccessfully trying to get the driver to pull over, authorities eventually cornered the driver in Pomona, where he ditched the vehicle and ran into a nearby elementary school, police said. A short time later, he was taken into custody "with the assistance of officers and a Taser," according to Williams.

The tow yard's owner, Joe Albert, said the suspect owns the vehicle, which was impounded at a DUI checkpoint last month, Peschiutta reported.

While there were a couple of traffic collisions with "fixed objects" during the pursuit, no one was injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
