Suspect Killed, Deputy Wounded In Compton Shooting
COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — A suspect was killed and a deputy was wounded early Thursday during a shooting in Compton.
The shooting happened during a DUI traffic stop in the 1300 of Long Beach Boulevard around 12:26 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
According to officials, the suspect, a Latino man in his 40s, did not have a license and was asked to exit the vehicle.
"At one point, he becomes uncooperative, he becomes combative. A struggle occurs, he tries to take the deputy's gun, he bites the deputy in the left arm, and at one point during that struggle there's a deputy-involved shooting," Lt. Eddie Hernandez said.
The deputy fired three shots with at least one hitting the suspect. The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released, Hernandez said.
There were no outstanding suspects.
The shooting was under investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the county Office of Independent Review.
