Suspect In Transient Woman's Murder Released Pending More Evidence

SANTA ANA (CBS)  —  A 40-year-old Santa Ana man suspected in the slaying of a transient woman was released from custody because prosecutors said they needed more evidence before charges could be filed, police said.

Preet Grewal was released last night from the Santa Ana jail, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Grewal was jailed on Tuesday and had to be released within 72 hours if charges weren't filed.

"It is not a closed case. We're still working it diligently," Bertagna said.

Grewal is suspected in the death of 45-year-old Sherry Ann Feeney, Bertagna said.

Feeney did not have a permanent address, and she and her three children had been staying with relatives, Bertagna said.

Grewal initially denied knowing Feeney, whose body was found in his apartment at 3301 S. Bear St. about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, but investigators later concluded they had some sort of relationship, Bertagna said.

Investigators have not revealed how Feeney was killed, except to say she suffered "trauma." An autopsy Wednesday was inconclusive on the cause of death and investigators ordered further tests, which could take weeks to complete.

Grewal was released last year from federal custody after serving time on a probation violation.
