An officer reported the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder sped through a red light, drove erratically, and refused to stop.
Police chased the suspect through Orange County to Bellflower, where the pursuit ended in a cul-de-sac off Artesia Boulevard and Palo Verde Avenue, near the 91 Freeway, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.
"At some point, while he was driving southbound on Palo Verde Avenue, a collision occurred between the Fullerton police (car) and the suspect (vehicle)," Lt. Dave Coleman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
"The vehicle came to a rest," Coleman said. "Multiple officers exited their vehicles, at which time the suspect tried to run over several officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred."
The unidentified suspect, who investigators say did not appear to be armed, was fatally wounded at the scene, officials said.
Witnesses reported hearing approximately a dozen gunshots.
Two Fullerton police officers were treated for minor bumps and bruises and a canine in one of the patrol units may have suffered minor injuries.
The Los Angeles and Orange county sheriff departments are assisting in the investigation.
