Suspect Arrested In Connection With Attack On Metro Bus Driver
COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — The LA County Sheriff's Department says they have arrested a suspect in the May 28 beating of a 53-year-old bus driver in Compton.
The Metro bus operator was attacked while driving a bus with 6-10 passengers on board. The incident occurred near Central Avenue and 165th Street about 5:30 p.m., said officials.
A person watching news coverage of the beating called authorities and said he believed he could identify the suspect.
After an investigation, deputies went to the suspect's home on June 1. LAPD officers determined that the man who answered the door matched the description of the alleged assailant and they arrested him.
The suspect, now identified as 36-year-old LA resident Edgar Leon, was booked into the LA County Jail for felony assault with intent to commit great bodily injury to a transit employee.This past Tuesday, Leon was also charged with an assault resulting in great bodily injury.
Leon is being held on $50,000 bail.
Sheriff's investigators say during interviews Leon implicated himself. After struggling to put money in the fare box, Leon allegedly started punching the driver "repeatedly," according to the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
Leon's next scheduled court date is June 18.
